99 Stories of God by Joy Williams

5.0

Do I understand why each of these little microfictions was organized in this hyper-stylized and post-modern collection? No. But do I ultimately care? Not really.

My appreciation of Joy Williams is increasing with each encounter. She writes books that I humbly concede are beyond me, but the prose is so precise and her humor is so invigorating that I am willing to blindly go wherever she takes me.

These are exercises in rich irony. They relish in a delightful (or, unsettling) surprise. An abandoned dog rescues an abandoned baby; a young boy hears a story but comprehends none of it; a child names a pet Actually; etc. God comes in here and there, as the title is want to suggest. But this isn't about Him. It's about everything else. (Or maybe, it's just about language: see above -- I don't know what I'm talking about.)
