Octopuses are amazing animals. Godfrey-Smith is an engaging writer with an obviously broad command of science and philosophy. That said, the musings on consciousness upon which the book is predicated are never convincingly tied to the octopus. I learned a great deal about the evolution of intelligent life, I learned a great deal about the octopus, and I learned a decent amount about Peter Godfrey-Smith's views of consciousness. But those three elements never really coalesce in anything beyond a cursory manner.
