The Secret History by Donna Tartt
3.25
dark mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

this book is well written and compelling, but it feels unfinished. we find everything out second hand from richard which can be boring towards the end instead of mysterious or puzzlelike

they shouldve been caught, or shouldve been a lot closer to being caught i think. if this was written now it wouldve played that way. there also needed to be more character development of julien. he was like just the overlap that connected the students, but richard wants us to believe he was this all powerful genius father figure. i didnt get that at all he was just some guy.

you would think tartt is a man by the way she wrote the woman characters. they are all one dimensional and only there to be lust after or to lust after someone else.
even camilla, one of the main characters was just some girl everyone including her BROTHER was in love with. just some hot piece of ass richard literally didnt know anything about her but was obsessed and in love with her. she was the damsel in distress every single time for what? for henry to shoot himself woopdiidoo

for a book so character filled and focused you think tartt would do a better job at making her characters and relationships believable to the reader. if i was her editor i would have told her to take a lot of pointless paragraphs out and add a lot more important paragraphs in.
did we need a whole chapter for bunnys boring funeral? i dont think so
