The Last Beginning by Wren James
4.0

This duology is so cute! I really enjoyed The Next Together, but I was still left with lots of questions after finishing it, and The Last Beginning not only answers these but introduces us to some awesome new characters. I love Clove - she is such a strong, fierce, realistic, female protagonist and I loved seeing how her adventures interfered with her parents' lives.

In The Last Beginning, you get to revisit some of the events of The Next Together in a whole new light and the time-travel shenanigans just get crazier. I love the way Lauren James has incorporated extra little tidbits of information in the form of extracts from biographies, blogs, pictures, graphs etc. It gives the story just a little bit extra, similar to the way the 2019-timeline was told in the first book. James also continues to use the different fonts and timelines along the top of each page to distinguish between times.

Because we only follow one main character in this instalment, we get so much more development and character from Clove - and more side characters. Clove's narration is so much fun to read and you can't help but love the interjections from the AI, Spart, every now and again - offering wisdom and much-needed advice, oblivious to all sarcastic remarks. James nails the adorable witty humour and human-AI relationship.

Basically, this series needs more love because it is fun, easy to read, unique (despite some very Back-to-the-Future-vibes) and has some fierce female characters. There aren't enough British YA books like this!
