Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
3.0
Clockwork Prince is the second installment in Ms. Clare's Infernal Devices Series. With a slightly more melodramatic feel than its predecessor, Clockwork Prince not only managed to wiggle in more drama and mayhem, but a love triangle that came out of left field.
In the first novel, Tessa is the unwilling victim of the mysterious Magister who has orchestrated her life into chaos. Now living with the Shadowhunters trying to help them figure out the mystery of the clockwork creatures and the Magister's hate for the Shadowhunters, Tess finds herself struggling not only with new truths about who she really is, but love and friendship.
Again, I enjoyed the historical aspect of this tale and seeing a new side to the Shadowhunter world was interesting. I found the Magister plot thread enthralling (if not sorely lacking from the story) and enjoyed getting deeper into the Downlander world.
What I did not like was the crazy love triangle that was crammed into this novel. In my humble opinion, it came out of nowhere and was not believable. I was left to either believe Tessa was a heartless character who was unable to discern the feelings of those around her, nor capable of understanding the consequences of her actions. She went from a sweet, naive, and heroic character to a girl willing to put others feelings aside in the pursuit of her own goal to feel loved and cared for. This did not sit well with me, nor did it line up with Tessa's overall character traits. In the end, I was left feeling confused.
Will's story was flushed out decently, if not with a tad too much melodrama. And I was left to wonder why James and Will, being the best friends and blood-brothers they claimed to be, didn't talk more about their lives, feelings, and troubles.
In the end, I enjoyed the mystery and paranormal drama of this story, but had a hard time swallowing the relationship drama. I'm fearful of how this will all flush out in the end. If it will be more misunderstandings and heartache (i.e. Jace & Clary take two) or if Ms. Clare can reign in her addiction to overly complicated love-triangles and wrap this one up with a decent resolution. This is my hope and my solemn prayer.
