Rea and the Blood of the Nectar by Payal Doshi

5.0

This book is one I would have loved to read as a child. It was one of those books that I couldn’t put down. The slow was a bit start, but once the plot tarted unravelling, I was hooked.

The fantasy world created by Doshi is incredible and definitely on par with popular middle grade series. It is a world that will captivate readers and make them wish they were there!

The book was extremely well developed in terms of both characters and plot. The main character is an incredibly relatable one, which I appreciate. We get to see substantial personal growth which is honestly refreshing. I know that these characters and this setting are an important addition to the world of fantasy, and the idea of Indian children seeing themselves represented in such a great book is heartwarming! I also love the character Leela, which definitely bumps up my rating of the book!

I do not have any criticism of this book that brings the rating down. While I do wish the action had begun sooner, it is redeemable due to the fact that it’s a series. I would also like to see the characters of Amma and Bajai have some more depth in the upcoming books but for a pilot book, it’s everything you could want.

Definitely read this when it comes out!
