It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying, and Creating a Life Worth Living by Terry Miller, Dan Savage

2.0

I was very disappointed. It feels like there wasn't an effort to get the stories and thoughts of people from multiple intersections (except religious), so it was a ton of white, cisgender, mostly financially stable people who were like, "wait til you graduate and then you'll get to run off to college or someplace else!" which isn't helpful for a lot of people who can't afford to or aren't afforded those options. There didn't seem to be a lot of folks in there who were kicked out of their homes or faced periods of being unhoused. I feel like so many of them could have done a group letter since their stories were near identical and so was their advice.

Also, what was with the campaign speeches throughout? Do these politicians do much to improve the lives of LGBTIQA2+ people? Not really. Not in a timeframe that matters. Why center their voices in this?

Honestly, this wouldn't have helped me as a kid and I feel like it could have been done better. As it is, it gave the same advice over and over again to the most privileged among our community.
