I was grateful that the tragic event happens at the start of the book so I could emotionally detach from that point as a self-protection mechanism. Given that the scenario is not something the author experienced, I took it really as more of a thought experiment. This also helped me to protect myself but also it did keep me from feeling truly invested in the main character, as her fictional existence was ever present. Having said that, I did enjoy this book. I also found that I related to her in unexpected ways, and anyone who has been in any kind of close relationship with a man suffering from mental illness probably will also. I liked the structure of the book with the before/after moving through time. I look forward to reading Claire Gleeson's future work.
