Ultimately disappointing. I have never read any PD James before, but I can only assume that this pushed her way out of her comfort zone. The characters were wooden, the dialogue felt forced, and the exposition was extremely clunky: even I know that sharing details by characters saying 'Remind me how xyz came to pass' is lazy writing.
On the one hand,the plot was great (even if my initial guess was wrong), and it was lovely to meet up with much-loved characters again. On the other, it just felt like less-than-great fanfiction, and I can get all of that I can eat on AO3 :/
