This is a tricky book, one that creeps up on you and leads you down paths, up mountains and up into family secrets you don’t expect.
I started this book in January and set it aside after 20 pages because I thought it was going to turn into a typical mean girl story. However, after seeing all the accolades and best of the year lists it made I added it back into my reading pile. And I’m so glad I did.
I flew through the story of Barbara, Bear, Tracy, TJ, Louise, Alice, et al in just a few days (remarkable for me considering how few books hold my attention these days, especially those over 400 pages). The author tied together themes of social class, mental illness, resilience, and being on the threshold of adulthood without tying them together too neatly. I was almost exhausted after reading this book, in an exhilarating way.
Moderate: Child death, Classism
