A Soul to Keep
by Opal Reyne
2.5, rounding down. I’m a sucker for Beauty and the Beast retellings, and I liked Orpheus and Reia (although she was a wee bit of a sociopath), as well the dim-witted Mavka and the bookstore demon-cat. But, goodness, this book needed some serious proofreading (sooo many typos), grammar policing, and editing. For instance, it’s not until about 2/3 of the way through that you learn, in a rather off-handed way, that the setting is actually Earth, which was invaded by demons somewhere around the late 19th/early 20th century. That’s the kind of thing you *might* want to establish upfront in your world-building, unless it’s supposed to be a big-reveal part of the plot (it was not). The book was also meandering, over-long, and could have used some judicious pruning.
All that being said, though, it did bang.
