The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante
3.0

Hmmmm

I kept waiting for the “devastating conclusion,” but it never arrived. A solid, well-told story, with brilliant moments. (Let’s face it—it kept me reading through four novels). However, I confess to not seeing what all the fuss is about.

What is interesting is reading through the various Goodreads reviews, the different reactions on whether Lila or Elena the more untrustworthy character. Elena is the very definition of an unreliable narrator, yet many read her assessment of Lila as if it were Holy Writ; others overdo an alternative POV and believe Lila can do no wrong, and that Elena's narrative is a complete betrayal of her.

I land in the middle, but it does speak to the quality of the narrative style that there is plenty of room for discussion on the nature of both their friendship, and Elena's portrayal of that friendship, only the least of which is what it says about the nature of narrative, how we know what we know and, more importantly, how we choose to tell that story.
