Homecoming King by Penny Reid

5.0

Homecoming King was the holiday goodness I never knew I was missing from Penny Reid! This book is full of quirky yet endearing characters, laugh out loud moments and slow burn sweetness that only Penny Reid can capture in one place.

Abigail (Abby) McNerny is completely clueless about love and relationships, especially after she was burned so badly in the past. She’s a crafting queen who hasn’t found a medium she doesn’t love, a bartender and one of the quirkiest heroines I’ve ever read. Her past definitely makes her guarded, but she’s making strides to see more for herself than her current situation and Rex is a huge reason why.

Rex “TW” McMurtry is a professional football player and has some incredible matchmaking skills - everyone he goes on a date with and introduces to one of his friends ends up married to them (major Good Luck Chuck vibes, thankfully minus Dane Cook). He’s gruff and blunt, but once he started to open up, he was incredibly thoughtful, so sweet and incredibly kind to the people who meant the most to him. He’s constantly fighting to overcome the “Training Wheels” moniker the news has saddled him with and Abby is the perfect person to help him make it happen.

Their relationship is the definition of slow burn, but it makes the pay off so much sweeter in the end! Rex and Abby go from acquaintances to business associates to friends to lovers and their relationship is funny, awkward and so adorable at every turn. The way they both want each other is palpable, but they each have their reasons for keeping their feelings hidden. But, once they finally open up, these two are the perfect match for each other, full of steam, naughty fantasies and a deep understanding they haven’t felt with anyone else.

I didn’t want Rex and Abby’s story to end! I love this new group of characters and can’t wait to see what amazing stories Penny Reid brings us with the other two books in this series - Drama King (Cyrus?) and Prom King (Alastair?). Oh, and the appearances from characters in other Pennyverse series? The best! So excited for the next two kings!
