Captive of the Pirate King by Rebecca F. Kenney
4.0

This was so, so close to being a five star read for me.

The good: it's a great story, with a real plot and some lovely world-building. There's some steamy tension, and some good spice scenes. It's a standalone (although part of a series) so you can read it as a one off without feeling like you're getting sucked into a big commitment. The characters are often very likable.

The bad: the ending was a little "okay I need to just get this book done so let's resolve everything in two chapters." The FMC falls prey to a very obnoxious, and in my opinion, anti-feminist trope.
Spoiler She loses her powers and yes I get that it's reversible if she wants, but man do I hate this trope.
There are some other weird misogynistic threads throughout the tale and this is my first time with the author so I don't know whether it's because that's what the author believes or we're just catering to the particular time period, but it made me dislike the MMC. We don't get any sort of epilogue which is a bummer since this is a stand alone, but I guess gives us the creative freedom to dream up whatever we want.

Anyway, worth a read for sure!
