Malini has become empress as prophesied, and Priya has survived the deathless waters and has magic flowing through her veins. Both face martyrdom to seal their respective homes' fates because they were once on the same side but now find themselves forced to fight each other.
Craft-wise, I think this book excelled in characterization and having the two MCs be actual people outside of their fraught relationship and romance. We were shown their differences from each other and the choices they were forced to make that made them opposed. The narrative purposely makes both of their sides justifiable and unjustifiable at different times, and the yearning and pining that did happen had narrative importance and didn't preclude important plot moments. It made the characters feel real and like the second book's outcome had real lasting consequences for the characters and the narrative as a whole.
I'm sad this story is over, but I fully understand why this series did so well for Tasha Suri. I am eagerly anticipating her newest release. 5/5.
