Rebel Rose by Emma Theriault
Did not finish book.
DNF-ed @54%. I had high hopes for this book. Disney princesses after "happily ever after" and historical realism mashup? I was like, YES. Yet, it didn't work out for me. Where should I even begin?
For starter, Belle’s character just rubbed me the wrong way. I am not super familiar with the original Beauty and The Beast Tale, but even I know that Belle is one of the smartest, most headstrong and confident Disney princesses. In Rebel Rose however, Belle didn't feel like the same Belle, her arc of overcoming self-doubts (and getting used to being rich, because "being rich is just SO hard") made little sense. All the other side characters were so boring and were there just because they were in the original story or to bring out Belle's (also very boring) personality.
The writing was really straight forward and quite bland. The way the story was told left little space for readers to interpret/discover things for themselves. And truth to be told, the pacing wasn't that great either.
