The Program
by Suzanne Young
This was a bit outside if my usual "box" and had a tad more teen romance than I usually care for, but overall, I have to admit, it was a pretty awesome book.
Teens are plagued by an epidemic of suicide in the U.S. and around the world. Once a teen is infected, it's only a matter of time...unless The Program recognizes the signs and intervenes. The treatment: Teens are taken to a program facility and their unhappy memories are chemically wiped from their minds, little by little, until what's left is happy and no longer distressing. They return to their lives with the gaps "stitched" together, and try to resume normal, "cured" life. But it's not a perfect science, and some kids have emotional reactions they can't explain and don't understand. A few, desperate to reclaim their memories and their sense of wholeness, explore the possibility and learn there may be more to the story.
