I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book! The origin story of Lady Macbeth, called Gruoch, from the Shakespeare play (which I haven’t read) was such an interesting look at the history of Scottish politics. Gruoch is an ambitious and determined girl, and as we follow her life until the events of the play Macbeth, we see the lengths she is willing to go to in order to become Queen. It also highlights way in which women had to manipulate those around them in order to achieve power and influence, unlike men who could fight for what they want.

I also didn’t realise that Gruoch, Macbeth, and King Duncan were real people although the true story is nothing like the play!
