emotional

Hartley and Prowse are unflinchingly honest in this account of Hartley's struggles with depression. It's an incredibly difficult and emotional read, but all I could think throughout was how much worse it would be to live through, and how this book could help prevent that reality for countless people.

In this account we learn Hartley's full story, from his and his mother's perspectives; and they don't always align. It's clear that Prowse had nothing but the best of intentions, but Hartley does not shy away from pointing out when her behaviour would drive him to distraction.

It is also beautiful to read about Hartley beginning to pull himself out of the worst of his depression, but with the complete honesty that the journey is far from over and there are no quick fixes. It is the level of honesty that I think makes this such an important read, for sufferers and their families, to see just how the right support can save someone's life.
