Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé

5.0

First, this book is filled with racism, homophobia, and black trauma so please, PLEASE make sure you’re in the right mind space to read it. Second, I am not black and as such my review MUST be taken with a grain of salt.

Okay, This book. Wow. It’s hard to say I loved it in the cheerful/positive sense because I hated reading this book. I hated the abuse that the characters went through, and I hated the system that constantly played against them. But I loved the moments of strength and support that took place. I loved the writing, and the mystery. You could feel every emotion that the characters went through. I screamed, I cried, I ranted about this book and that is why it gets 5 stars from me. I think that the ending is both satisfying but simultaneously frustrating, I believe it is meant to showcase how pervasive the system can be but that every action against it matters.
Ace of Spades was one of the most impacting and favorite books of the year.
