This has always been one of my favorite stories of all time, but I did not expect myself to sob through this read. Maybe it was the timing—that I read it while I was already navigating a storm of emotions. But the beautiful thing about this story is how much of a balm it can be to a hurting heart.

Anne Shirley is probably my favorite literary character on account of the fact that I have been able to see myself in her in every stage of my life thus far. She is funny and fierce and lovable, and while her experience navigating adolescence is nothing like my own, her tenacity and imagination have inspired me like nothing else.

This book is a warm hug. The nostalgia of childhood. The scent of October on the wind. Wistful and welcome.
