War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

1.0

Me: I don't understand why War and Peace is so critically acclaimed.

Him: [sarcastically] That's just because you're not reading it correctly so you're not picking up on the hidden symbolism and themes.

Me: There is literally no symbolism. You can't even pretend there's symbolism with this book. And as far as themes go, the only theme is everyday life. War isn't even a theme. Or peace. Or anything besides the mundanity of everyday.

Him: [laughs]

Me: It's just a recounting of daily events. It doesn't even fit the criteria of a book. There's no overarching plot which needs to be resolved within the confines of the book.
