this was everything i was hoping for. i was 15 when the girls like girls music video came out and it was at a time that i needed it so badly. this book expands on that world, giving even more life to coley, sonya, and trenton than just the glimpse we see in the video. i loved seeing everyone come to life further and feel all the more real.
the writing was enjoyable and super easy to read. i wish we’d seen a little further into the future, and i do have some gripes with the way sonya is portrayed—mainly with the way she treats coley towards the end—but ultimately it does a really good job of portraying how teenagers deal with everything. it’s hormonal and complicated and terrifying and so brilliant shown throughout.
love is complicated, especially queer love in a (probably homophobic) small town, and this book really deals with that feeling well. however, it deals with a fair few dark issues on top of all that, so definitely check the trigger warnings.
