Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Suleika Jaouad

adventurous emotional hopeful inspiring reflective sad

4.0

4 stars - One part cancer memoir (Susu got leukemia in her 20s), and one part cross-country roadtrip, this book was reflective, heartbreaking, adventurous, and hopeful. The author details her journey and the experience of her family and new boyfriend through diagnosis, treatment, transplant, and recovery.

This year, her cancer returned and she is now recovering from another bone marrow transplant. When she was first about to undergo a transplant, she convinced the NYT to feature a column she wrote called Life, Interrupted. Her road trip is based on needing a rite of passage to punctuate moving from the kingdom of the sick to the kingdom of the well, and she visits some of the people who wrote to her after reading her column. A very touching, powerful memoir.
