Enchanting Pleasures
by Eloisa James
Up until about the half way point this was a 1 star read for me, but I am glad that I kept with it as my enjoyment did increase. I do, however, wish it had increased much more to make me feel like sticking with it was perhaps just a bit more worth it... which also accounts for why I started to majorly skim.
The first half had some issues, most of which were made better by the half way point.
My issues:
1. the secondary storyline with Lucien and another character...who were these people, why should their romance take up so much time and actually have more initial development than the lead couple? They were a distraction and there should not been nearly as much time spent with them that there was.
2. Gabby is naïve, but there were times where naïve just became borderline stupid. She so easily convinces herself that she is in love with Peter, but when she shares several passionate kisses with Quill and he proposes to take Peter's place her first worry is that she doesn't love him...And for someone concerned with learning the ins and outs of society she sure doesn't bother to ask any questions or seek help on that. Warranted she is often adorable and very well meaning, there were just too many times early on that she got on my nerves.
3. I have no issues with Quill, I liked him almost immediately-- I just wish he was more present in those early chapters to really get a sense that he does like Gabby.
4. Peter is so obviously gay, and it is clearly presented in his snobbish behavior, dress, and his main reason why he can't marry Gabby. The only reason he was going to try was if he could make her into someone he deemed presentable-- and he is just a huge jerk about it. Considering how much time is spent from his perspective I would've like him to be a bit more likable-- I honestly think there were some missed opportunity there. After Quill decides to marry Gabby himself this is let up on a bit, but it is a bit too late.
5. What on earth was the whole Easy Indian Trading Co. story line about-- other than the fact that Gabby came from India it seemed so out of place and distracting.
What I liked:
1. When I could get passed what often seemed idiotic behavior/thought process of Gabby I did really like her naïve and kind nature. She was just too silly.
2. After the marriage Quill and Gabby's relationship was much better developed and entertaining, but it was a struggle to get there.
