This was a tough one for me. I started with reading the kindle version, and I HATED the format. If you aren’t familiar, it’s set up like a rolling stone/documentary talking heads kind of piece, with just characters telling the story, no other description or narrative. I didn’t feel like I had anything I could hook into, my eyes couldn’t help but skim. I fully put it aside so I could read something more fun on a vacation. When I posted about hating the format, a friend suggested the audio version, which did make a HUGE difference. Each character is a different actor, so it sounded more like a documentary or podcast. For sure I suggest that route. However, while TJR writing quality and ability to create complete vibrant characters is undeniable, I found the plot itself to be pretty predictable. I am excited for the tv adaptation because the color and feel of the 70s and being able to hear the music will add so much. I did find myself wanting to Google some of the photos they talk about, or looking up performances, because that felt so real (once I started listening to the audio that is).
