The Library Book
by Susan Orlean
4.5 stars - Some of my earliest and fondest memories involve libraries. I can still remember the amazing smell of the public library in my hometown in its cozy little building on Water Street. It moved to a more modern building when I was in grade school, and while it had its own charms (including being much closer to my house, and the first place I was allowed to go 'all by myself'), it lost that beautiful smell! One of my favourite scenes in any book is how Francie describes her local library in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, my very favourite book. All that to say, I love libraries and I was so excited for this book. I wasn't disappointed. This was such a neat, quirky, fun book that really captured the spirit of libraries. It's partly investigative journalism-type writing exploring a fire that ravaged LA's Central Library in 1986. It's also partly a testimonial for libraries as a whole, and how they contribute to their communities. And it's also partly an autobiography about the author's relationship with libraries. I think this is a must read for those who love books and reading!
