Educated by Tara Westover

challenging emotional inspiring reflective sad slow-paced

I assigned this book to my AP class. It was a popular recommendation in my National Math and Sciences Institute conferences. I really enjoyed it; although, I do feel that it had a slow start. My students enjoyed being in conversation with Westover about topics like: family dynamics, gender roles, religion, trauma, mental health, and education. I have a few students who do not believe that she never went to school which made for entertaining but also stimulating discussions. They have a hard time grappling with the idea that she could have had any semblance of a chance at succeeding at such prestigious institutions without a more traditional educational background. It made for some really interesting conversations about nature vs. nurture, intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation etc. They also engaged heavily with concepts of ethics, morality, and familial/societal obligation. As a lover of memoirs, I’d say it’s a thought provoking book, and as a teacher, I’d say that it was a fantastic vehicle to discuss a multitude of issues which plague us all.
