The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon

4.0

Set in Kabul, the focus is on Kamila Sadiqi, a young woman who finds a way to support her family and survive the Taliban regime.

The Afghanistan men have fled the country, been imprisoned, or forced into the Taliban. The women of Afghanistan are left alone to care for their families.

Amazingly, this young woman, builds a successful dressmaking business during a time when women are banded from the streets, school and work. Not only does she provide for her family but she employs other women, and literally turns her home into a factory.

We hear so much about the Taliban and their lack of respect for women, but never hear about how the women deal with the controls put on them.

I found it very moving to know that these women had the determination to persevere and care for their families no matter what.
