War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

Not quite in the league with "Black Beauty" (really, what is?) but a good story for pre-teens, touching on the tragedy and foolishness of WWI with seriousness but without being too grim. I confess I got a little teary near the end. Really hope to someday see the play!
