Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz
4.0
I didn't read any reviews or blurbs for this book before starting, so the story-within-a-story format came as a surprise twist to the murder mystery trope. Horowitz did such an excellent job not only creating different voices for his characters, but creating no less than five different writing styles for various authors. The book managed to be an indulgent read for a murder mystery junky while still approaching the genre with healthy criticism.
One star reserved because I found the central
narrator's character development to be a little rushed. I wanted to like her much more than I got the chance to. Perhaps she'll be further developed the second Ryeland book.
