I had such high hopes for this book. Life for the Japanese Americans when they were in internment camps is not talked about. It is as though we want to sweep it under a rug and pretend that our ancestors did not do this thing. Unfortunately, our ancestors did do this and this book does not show it for the bad thing it was. Yes, they move out of their home and are sent to live in new homes, but in this story, they still go to school play soccer, and have pets. Some even have gardens they love. It’s all too nice, Manami does not handle this well even though one of her neighborhood friends lives in the same camp and does not talk for most of the story. The ending also left me hanging with so many unanswered questions. I wanted to love this book, but it just wasn’t for me.
