Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

3.0

I didn't love Rooney's last book but since she receives so much praise I was excited to give her new book a try.

In her newest novel Rooney tackles how four millennials try to live and find beauty amongst our current climate. Hitting on themes of consumerism, climate change, and politics.

We have Alice, a famous writer who shy's away from her own fame. Felix who struggles with commitment. Eileen, (Alice's close friend) is tired of having relationships not work out and Simon who is old friends with both Alice and Eileen and is fairly satisfied with his life.

Unfortunately this one didn't wow me. I liked it better than her last one. And I get what Rooney was doing here but most of the book was rather depressing and I think maybe that was Rooney's point. Through despair is there beauty to be found? I guess thats up to each of us to decide. As for the characters I really liked Eileen and Simons characters best. Simon was probably my favourite actually, I found him most relatable. Alice and Felix fell flat for me. Also this book felt disjointed. The email sections felt disconnected from the rest of the story and Alice's in particular felt like mini essays rather than personal letters to a close friend. I know so many love Rooney's work and there are readers that are going to be over the moon about this one but it was very middle of the road for me.

Thanks to the publisher for sending me this book opinions are my own.
