I respect its book because its descriptions of submarine travel must have been remarkable in its time, but from a modern perspective nothing about the story stands out. It seems to me that the book was so popular in its time due to the fact that it was describing submarines which were not in full existence at the time. The story itself was bland and plodding, and had an underwhelming finish.
