The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany
3.0
This book is a classic for a reason, but definitely strays from what you would expect from generic fantasy novels. Lord Dunsany has some really cool ideas and does a great job of setting up the rules of his world and sticking to them.
One of the most interesting parts of this book, is the inclusion of the temporal difference between Elfland and the regular world. Time passes much more slowly in Elfland and one of the most memorable parts of the book for me is when Orion asks the troll how long it has been since they have seen eachother, the troll informs him that "It is still to-day."
The only real problem I had with this book is the Deus Ex Magica sort of ending that it has. There is a lot of buildup, with Orion leaning more and more towards his elfish heritage and his father continuing indefinitely on his journey, then it is all just wiped away by the Elf-king's final spell. I would have enjoyed it more if the principal characters actually had an effect on the outcome of the story.
