Lesbian Communities: Festivals, Rvs, and the Internet by Penny Sablove, Esther D. Rothblum

This book was not very theoretical unlike other things published in the Journal of Lesbian Studies. Many of these essays take a trans-exclusionary stance or contain trans-exclusionary rhetoric. A few dedicated short sentences to race analysis, but don’t end up writing anything useful about the lack of non-white diversity in lesbian separatist communities. An article on class (by Bev Jo) is overcasted by intense transphobia curated through Jo’s personal account which hurts her credibility. There were a couple articles that took a trans-inclusionary stances. Overall, I got some information on what lesbian space looked like in the 1970s to the 1990s, the dynamics between the women, and feminist society/utopia. There is value in reading this and reflecting on past (and present) lesbian values, instead of shying away from our more controversial culture points.
