The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
by Ursula K. Le Guin
i’ve been aware of this short story for years now, and have only just picked it up to read for myself! i am teetering between it being the perfect length, and also wanting to know more.
the twist while reading it did not surprise me quite as much as it did years ago, in a brief explanation. yet it was still disturbing to imagine, especially with how descriptive le guin is.
somehow a perfect commentary today. the people in omelas are those who’ve somehow lost their conscience and chooses to live in their personal utopia, despite the stark differences in their lives as opposed to those that are struggling extremely.
quite possible that we (those that seek to educate ourselves to help the world) are the ones that walked away from omelas, the ones that chose the discomfort of truth, that couldn’t bear the idea of not caring.
