A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park

4.0

I picked up this book at the library without realizing it was the same author as Archer's Quest. I'm glad I did, because, while Archer's Quest failed to interest me, and I abandoned it after a chapter or so, A Single Shard captivated me the whole way through. Set in 12th century Korea, it feels familiar enough so that the characters and story are completely accessible, and different enough to feel almost like reading a fantasy novel (why are so many fantasies set in vaguely medieval settings?) I think the fact that I listened to the audiobook, which was narrated by an older-sounding British man, really reinforced the fantasy-feel for me.

Would recommend to middle-grade readers and to others who like reading middle-grade fiction.
