I have no idea how I found this book, but I am so glad I did. I think it was the mesmerizing cover that made me fall for it. I am a sucker for good book covers..
Cities of Smoke & Starlight takes place on the planet Yalvara and it has been 1000 years since the last refugees came from the "First Earth".
We follow Hallie Walker, who is a gifted scholar and has a bubbly personality. When she loses her job, she is desperate to accept anything as long as she doesn't have to move back home.
Kase Shackley is the best pilot in the realm, but he always gets himself in trouble. After almost killing a pilot in training, he has to accept going on a dangerous mission to clear his name.
Kase & Hallie hate each other from the very beginning. But together with a team of experts, they go on a mission from the government to find the native Yalvs of Yalvara.
I instantly got "The mummy" vibes from this book, and it is so well written for being Earnest's debut book. I especially love Kase, as he is the grumpy / but has a big heart character. The banter between Hallie & Kase is extremely entertaining. The world of Yalvara is interesting with a lot of mysteries. Why have the people lost all their technology from the first earth for example?
If you want adventure & slow-burn romance this book is for you! (There are also dragons...)
I immediately ordered the second book. Realms of wrath & ruin
