When I discovered this book in a Londoner bookstore, I was sure this was to be an entertaining and somewhat trashy (but still hilarious) read. I even read the first chapter to avoid a possible disappointment. Unfortunately, that first chapter was written from the perspective of Lord Quimby, who quickly became my favorite character along with his loyal servant Perkins and turned out to be merely a side-kick.
I want to start this off by saying that I couldn't stand the main character - Queen Victoria. She was bitchy, unfair to those around her, ill-tempered and so in luuurve with Albert that she made one stupid mistake after another. Now, I know that she is a Queen and part of her behaviour is typical for spoiled brats like her - the problem is, she didn't seem like a spoiled brat in the beginning! On the contrary, she was rather pleasant, albeit with some childish notions for a girl her age, but still kind of funny and very likeable. Then part 2 started and she made a complete turn, getting worse by every part. It didn't help that she was an insufferable Mary Sue.
The title also didn't quite uphold the promise it made. I was expecting a novel about teenage Queen Victoria, being trained in secret to be a cool secret monster huntress and developing some awesome skills over the years while trying to struggle court life, family and love. Instead, this novel is filled with her hissy fits and proclamations of love to Albert. The latter is btw the only reason why she eventually becomes a kickass demon hunter - just like, in ONE DAY. Did I mention that she is an insufferable Mary Sue?
Really, what made me not entirely dislike the book were only a handful of things:
- the first part, which is entertaining and fast-paced
- Maggie Brown. She was the cool demon huntress I expected Victoria to be. Also, her relationship with her husband was a better romance than the one between Victoria and Albert
- The gore. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I liked the fight scenes a lot (except the ones with Victoria killing demons as if she didn't learn to do that just yesterday )
- Just about every scene with Lord Quimby and Perkins. Their scenes were funny, full of innuendos and weird fetishes, as well as Quimby's hilarious shenanigans. I really want a spin-off about Quimby's and Perkins' adventures in Paris. Please.
