Demian
by Hermann Hesse
It took me a long time to finish this slim volume. I had picked it up as a reprieve between endless bouts of studying, a little Classic that I could quickly devour. Instead, each chapter evoked so much introspection and emotion that I could only savour it in the tiniest bites. Surprisingly progressive, on matters like sex, war, world religions. Many "great" books of yesteryear can't bear scrutiny from modern eyes (and perhaps they shouldn't have to) but this one can. Hesse sounds fatalistic at times yet urges the reader to be their best selves. Many layers, Biblical and political references abound. Ultimately an uplifting novel dealing with inner turmoil.
