Untamed
by Anna Cowan
There were definitely things I liked about this book: the characters, for example. Kit and Darlington were both very charming, in their own ways. I liked that Kit was a brash, un-ladylike sort of woman, and that Darlington identified as an un-manly man - and that it influenced how he interacted with the world, not least because of how his father treated him for it. Queer background characters are always nice, too, and I usually enjoy a good crossdressing plot.
I guess, though, the key term there is "good" plot. I found the plot of this novel really messy and incoherent and, above all, boring. There were also glaring historical inaccuracies everywhere you looked, and I'm no historian, so when your inaccuracies throw ME out of your story repeatedly, you know you've got a problem. I also was irritated that Darlington's bisexuality was, like, mentioned once and never thought of again, because fuck, if you're going to give me a queer romance hero I want something other than a dude who sleeps with ladies left and right and is only established as bi when his former mistress worries that he's going to take advantage of her brother (which, yeah, thanks for the predatory queer trope). Also, a pettier complaint: way to build up to femdom and then never give me femdom in the actual sex scenes!
I don't know, I'm just frustrated with this book overall. On paper it looks like so many things I would like, but in execution it mostly left me cold.
