The Sound of Silence by Esme Carmichael

5.0

Ive learned that books by Esme Carmichael demand to be read in no more than 3 sittings haha. Just like the others in this series, this book pushes you to keep reading page after page until you reach the end. Even then, I was longing for one more page! (One more book—let’s be real.)
I could gush for ages, but I like to keep my reviews short so I’ll try to be brief.

These characters have so much depth! I love that there are no purely good or bad people in this world. Even the most evil character shows moments of kindness, (I still like him... why do I still kinda like him?! Lmao) And even our heroes have made questionable decisions with terrible consequences. The story is so raw and real, while in the context of a fantasy. It explores the depths of darkness in humanity, and even when it hurts my heart to read it, I’m enjoying the heck out of it.
The cherry on top is the beautiful prose. Which is so welcome in contrast to the sometimes gruesome setting of The New World.

Clear your schedule, then buy this book.
