The Newcomer: A Novel
by Mary Kay Andrews
The Newcomer is a fairly cute mystery/romance combo, but as a long-time MKA reader, I didn’t think it was one of her best. There isn’t really much mystery involved (I think it was pretty obvious from the beginning what happened to Tanya; that never felt like much of a mystery to me) and maybe I’m in the minority but I wasn’t a huge fan of Joe. He came across as controlling and pushy at times and I didn’t really like how he interacted with Maya (what kind of hero makes a four-year-old cry by bringing up death when her mom was just murdered?) or Letty, to be honest. Maybe it’s realistic for an unwed man in his late 30s to be clueless around kids but if he’s the hero we are supposed to fall for him right? It just didn’t happen for me here. His refusal to believe that Letty wasn't interested in him rubbed me the wrong way too.
I did enjoy the cast of characters at the Murmuring Surf, including Ava whom I think you can’t help but love. As always, MKA delivered on the setting – she’s the queen of beach reads for a reason.
Overall, this was a fast, fun read. It did feel pretty predictable most of the time, but MKA knows how to deliver a summery beach read like almost no one else.
