Aimee falls in love with Kentigern almost at first sight. He's big, ugly, and a fierce fighter with a worthless title. She's a nouveau riche merchant's daughter who picks Kentigern for her husband. Their marriage started on uneven ground (wealth, class, feelings, etc.) but Aimee's determined cheerfulness and surety that her love will conquer all propels her to keep trying to make her marriage work. Unlike other readers, I never hated Kentigern. Yes, he's a dunce but he was never intentionally cruel. He's just a dumb man, ignorant to all things soft and mushy like feelings and thinking about others. There's a scene in particular that makes me cry every time I read this book. Aimee sings a song called "The False Lover" and the story is gut wrenching. Her performance is gut wrenching. I love this story because it never fails to evoke my emotions. This is probably my favorite Coldbreath book.
