The Woman in Black
by Susan Hill
Actual rating 3.7
Listened to on audio. I think this is an excellent introduction into the Gothic horror genre for me, it's very atmospheric. Something hard to come by these days. I can see and feel the weather in it. But I do have fond childhood attachment to the film and the play adaptations so this may be why.
It also keeps the plot pulled as tight as possible with Gothic elements and bulkier language, so strikes a nice balance. The plot went at a nice pace too, revealing more towards the end.
It kept my interest pretty steady all the way throughout and the language flowed beautifully.
In a lovely way, it feels like a book from the early Victorian period
