Kafka on the Shore
by Haruki Murakami
i don’t know whether i loved this book or didn’t like it at all. the main body of the book was wonderfully written and was quintessential metaphysical murakami, however the last fifth or so felt so distant from the original part that it was almost a strange epilogue. of course, one would say that that Is the metaphor but i don’t know how i feel about that sort of ending. a regular freudian fantasy.
i liked it, but when i sensed that it was going for a meta narrative conclusion, i’m not sure whether i enjoyed the ending.
oshima was delightful to read about. i hope he is happy.
did i prefer it to other murakami novels ? no. but is this by any means a poor novel? also no. i loved the metaphysical elements of wind up bird, and if they were more subtle in this book then perhaps it could have been five stars. who knows. i will be thinking about this for a while.
