This is exactly the kind of speculative sci-fi (with a sprinkling of dystopia) that I love. It's a bit like Star Trek... Only darker, grittier, and more realistic to the human experience.

Before I began reading, I read the reviews that said it was slow and heavy on philosophy — correct on both accounts, and I think better for it. Like so much great sci-fi, Beggars in Spain challenges us to think about what makes us human, what makes a community, and how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I world consider re-reading in a few years.
