I normally tend to try and not to read cis straight male authors and wow If i could give this book a zero i would.....

This is one of the most male gaze-centric and cliche horror books i have ever read. The characters are very one-dimensional and reduced to stereotypes. The 'LGBTQIA representation' was a transphobic anecdote by a priest and a lesbian relationship that in the book is portrayed horribly and was, once again, only described through outdated and harmful stereotypes.

There is a very graphic SA scene which was described in detail for several pages and which did not need to happen. It was grotesque and from what i've now heard, this is something of a common occurrence in his books. It was used as a plot device to drive the male character forward (shocker) and show the woman as a 'damsel in distress' who is also completely fine after it. The premise of the book sounded amazing, but it was executed in the worst possible way.
