I struggled to follow the politics and different characters. Before reading 'War and Peace' I had the benefit of watching the BBC series, which helped me visualise the characters.

While I was reading, I was thinking that we often like to give historical events a neat linear narrative, but this book embraces the messiness and the chaos and confusion of war.

In some ways this reminded me of 'Birdsong'.
